Oh boy!

Coyotes remind me of drunk soccer hooligans after loosing a game – they come through, wrecking havoc, leaving behind a trail of destruction. At least that is the image I built up in my head after watching one too many nature documentaries. My neighbor’s stories of how the coyotes’ call makes dogs want to follow them and get eaten isn’t a lot of help either, seeing how I have four knuckleheads that do not require any encouragement!

The coyotes visited at 6:30 in the morning today, waking me then the dogs up, and scaring the hell out of all of us!!! Ok, so I am not so sure about he mutts being scared, but their bark sure didn’t sound like a friendly greeting! I am completely discombobulated when I wake up from that deep of a sleep. In my foggy mind I am thinking: cats in heat? But mine are all in the house!? Gah! So the barking starts up right then, and I am telling myself how the dogs can’t have a potty break right now. (We’ll discuss THAT some other time.) The yipping begins again, dogs are going berserk, and I am now wide awake, realizing it’s the coyotes calling! Of course it’s still pitch dark, so I am out of bed in a millisecond, grabbing for my glasses and shoes, yelling at the dogs, running down the stairs! Halfway down I remembered we’ve got some old bottle rockets, so in a frenzy I grab those, a lighter and a can from the recycling bin. Figured the north deck is a good spot, but of course the stupid thing just goes up in the trees – no loud bang follows! Of course by this point the coyotes are probably at the neighbors anyway, which isn’t such a bad thing, seeing how she’s got goats. I am thinking those guys are easy prey. Not a nice thought, I know, but the poor things are in pretty bad shape, so the coyotes taking a weak one or two is just nature’s way of working things out, right?!

At this point I am still scared for Jack and Hammer, also bummed that the dogs and I will not be going on an expedition today. To be continued; must go check on the boys!

First snow 2010.11.20

It snowed starting Saturday late afternoon and kept on for a good 24 hours. Were we prepared? Just marginally better than when we moved in 2 years ago. I tend to count the winters, not the years we’ve lived her, and you would too, being off-grid, a mile long steep uphill dirt road away from the pavement that is so far out of town they plow the closes schools’ parking lot before they head down our way. So this will make it our winter #3; Jack, Hammer and Pum’kin’s 1st.

I’ll just have to get back to introducing everybody some other time. Pix will come later too, must build up fire in wood stove before I wash my hair, looks to be close to freezing outside, thermometer says 16 indoors. Dogs are snoring away as usual after running amok. They all had one-on-one time too, took a walk x3 minus Beans. He did not feel like getting shiverbutty in the snow.
